After years of keeping up with rapid growth by constructing traditional prototype schools, the Independent School District in Frisco, Texas, looked for a new approach for Panther Creek High School. An outstanding example of educational design, the school, built with insulating concrete forms, was crafted to enhance student and teacher experience. The 386,000-square-foot campus, which opened in 2022, serves approximately 850 students. Designed by Corgan of Frisco, the project incorporated student feedback, prioritizing bright, open spaces that foster learning and engagement.

At the heart of the school is a three-story common area, illuminated with natural light, where design meets function. The focal point here is the terrazzo floor, complemented by multipurpose learning stairs in terrazzo.

A custom logo of the school mascot, perfectly scaled for the space, adds visual impact and reinforces school spirit and identity.

“The terrazzo draws your attention to the floors immediately upon entering the campus,” said Tommy Hill, Frisco ISD’s director of custodial services. The terrazzo’s simple, clean field design complements the modern aesthetic while limiting installation costs. Its design allowed the district to invest in a long-lasting, high-quality floor without the higher costs of more extensive patterning.

The district also values terrazzo for its ease of maintenance. Unlike other flooring options, terrazzo requires only nightly sweeping and auto scrubbing to maintain its pristine appearance. Mr. Hill appreciates its resistance to scratches and its long-term cost-effectiveness. Incorporating terrazzo in critical areas such as the foyer, stairwells, and gym entrances aligns with the district’s commitment to sustainability.

Terrazzo floors—often lasting the life of the building—minimize environmental impact compared to less durable flooring options like vinyl composition tile (VCT). The national average annual maintenance cost for a 40,000-square-foot terrazzo floor is estimated at $22,400, while for VCT, it is around $54,000. In addition to the disruption and environmental impact of flooring disposal and replacements, terrazzo can save around $600,000 in maintenance and replacement costs over 30 years. Its durability and ease of maintenance make terrazzo a highly cost-effective and sustainable flooring solution.
