In October 2019, an EF3 tornado caused an estimated $1.5 billion in damages in Northwest Dallas, making it the costliest tornado event in Texas. Walnut Hill Elementary was substantially destroyed, requiring complete renovation, major structural repairs, and full MEP replacements. However, Dallas ISD saw an opportunity to transform the site into Career Institute North, a state-of-the-art career and technical education (CTE) facility for training students in high-skill, high-wage, and high-demand occupations.
Aligned with the district’s vision of establishing four CTE locations for grades 9–12, Career Institute North offers hands-on training in fields like aviation, automotive technology, EMT, firefighting, culinary arts, robotics, healthcare, software development, construction, and architecture. Students earn certifications and dual credits before graduation. Centrally located, it serves five high schools within a 20-mile radius where students are bussed in two times a day.
The design team successfully incorporated the original architectural design into the new facility, respecting the community’s desire to preserve the historic 1920s Mediterranean-style building. This approach saved costs and resources, diverting approximately 5,200 tons of materials from landfills. New additions included a three-story wing, a two-story storm shelter, and a one-story addition, accommodating up to 3,200 students.
The interior design drew inspiration from Google and Apple campuses, featuring metallic colors, wood accents, and collaborative spaces while blending the historic exterior with a modern interior. Key design elements, such as arched windows and terracotta tile roofs, were preserved. The new space plan included dynamic gathering spaces, an enclosed courtyard for media projection, and a cafeteria with clerestories for natural light.
The facility met CHPS standards, emphasizing landscape conservation, efficient lighting, HVAC systems, and water usage. Approximately 80 percent of the site’s plants are native to Texas, reducing maintenance and irrigation needs while supporting a diverse ecosystem. The 169,000-square-foot Career Institute North, costing $80 million, officially opened in August 2023.
