Designed by RDG Planning & Design, the Mesa County Early Childhood Education Center at Clifton Campus transforms a 13-acre site on Colorado’s Western Slope into a vibrant community hub where learning, connection, and nature converge. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding book cliffs, the building’s bold metal panels in desert reds and dusk blues reflect the regional landscape and serve as intuitive wayfinding elements.
Within this single facility, the early childhood center, workforce training, and community center operate as distinct yet interconnected programs that foster collaboration and lifelong learning. The early education center provides care and instruction for children from six weeks to five years, with flexible classrooms that can adapt for infants, toddlers, or preschoolers as community needs evolve. Each of the twelve classrooms connects directly to secure, age-appropriate outdoor environments that encourage exploration and play.
The adjacency of workforce training classrooms and early education spaces creates real-world observation and mentorship opportunities for early childhood professionals, strengthening Mesa County’s educator pipeline. Shared amenities—including a high school-sized gymnasium and multipurpose rooms—extend the building’s impact, offering spaces for recreation, public gatherings, and community events. Together with an adjacent public library and central green commons, the project embodies an inclusive, enduring vision of community growth and shared purpose.
