The Nighthawk Legacy Center redefines the campus support environment for student veterans, translating the discipline and lived experience of military service into a purpose-driven academic setting. Serving a region with one of the nation’s highest concentrations of active-duty and veteran populations, the Center eases the transition from service to scholarship through design that is supportive and empowering.
Strategically sited along Northeast Lakeview College’s central plaza and framed by a mature tree canopy, the building acts as both gateway and gathering place. Expansive glazing and controlled transparency balance openness with security, reflecting an intentional response to the heightened situational awareness common among veterans.
Internally, the plan is organized around legibility and choice. Clear sightlines and layered zones support peer mentorship, academic advising, counseling, and quiet respite, promoting next-generation learning through integrated wraparound services.
A palette of natural textures, calming blue-green tones, and subtle abstractions of digital camouflage embed cultural identity while enhancing well-being. Constructed as a single-story, steel-framed structure with masonry and metal panel cladding, the facility prioritizes durability, efficiency, and long-term value.
More than a student services facility, the Nighthawk Legacy Center transforms a commitment to service into a foundation for academic achievement, advancing a framework for veteran-focused educational design.
