The Tisbury School has anchored learning and community life since 1929, earning deep affection as a formative place for generations of Islanders. As its centennial approached, age and evolving educational needs made renewal essential. From the outset, the community emphasized that any changes must preserve the school’s character while preparing it for the future.
The design responds with a careful balance of restoration and expansion. The constrained site and desire to retain existing structures led to a unique solution that weaves old and new, improves access, and enhances circulation without disrupting the school’s familiar feel. A new bridge links the historic and contemporary wings.
Additions and upgrades introduce the elements expected of a 21st-century learning environment while maintaining an “old school” warmth through high, wood-finish windows. Media centers on each floor, a modern gym with performance stage, dedicated band room, and updated cafeteria expand opportunities for learning and enrichment. Custom environmental graphics root students in their layered context – from Town to Island to Commonwealth and beyond.
The renewed Tisbury School honors its past while offering a flexible, future-ready home for generations to come.
