The renovation of Hogg Memorial Auditorium at The University of Texas at Austin reinvigorates a campus landmark building to enhance student life and community events through complementary placemaking. The design of the 1000-seat venue reintroduces natural light, encourages communal gathering, expands access and celebrates the architecture’s historical significance by carefully balancing tradition with innovation. Creative spatial thinking resolved technical deficiencies by making space for required improvements within the footprint of the existing building to preserve the historic façade and heritage trees. New adaptations, such as the patterned wood wall in the lobby which draws inspiration from the historic carved plaster surrounding the stage, were thoughtfully woven into the existing fabric of the building with special attention to context and character. LEED Platinum Certified, the project transforms the underutilized 90-year-old building from a state of disrepair to once again serve as a lively hub for students and visitors to the university.
