In Kecoughtan High School’s new science wing, the terrazzo floor goes beyond being merely a hard-wearing surface underfoot—it puts the region on the map in more ways than one. Incorporated into the floor is a bright rendering of the local terrain and geography, showcasing the state’s natural beauty. The floor becomes grounds for exploration, offering a dynamic and immersive learning environment.
The expansion, introducing 15 state-of-the-art classrooms and converting old science classrooms into general classrooms, marked a significant addition to the Hampton, Virginia, school. An objective of maximizing learning opportunities within the campus finds vibrant expression in the centerpiece of the interior design: a meticulously crafted terrazzo map of Southeastern Virginia, complete with accurate longitude and latitude grids and coordinates, including a detailed outline of the Chesapeake Bay shoreline.
Dividing the lower from upper-grade level wings is a spacious and practical multipurpose commons space that serves as an auditorium and cafeteria. Bringing interest to the larger areas, “We worked with Hampton Schools to make every space in this science addition a learning area,” said Chris Gossett, Lead Architect with RRMM of Chesapeake, Virginia. “In the large extended learning area space, the terrazzo map turns a conventional floor into a learning opportunity.”
Taking students on the scenic route, the intricate waterways and coastline are traced in aluminum divider strips, paint-by-number style. All the strips were hand-bent onsite, a stencil guiding the terrazzo artisans to ensure accuracy. Five epoxy colors are formulated to represent the bay, with its earth, marsh, and water, while glass and mirror aggregates add depth and sparkle.
The National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association presented a 2024 Honor Award for the installation to The David Allen Company of Raleigh, North Carolina. Designed for durability, these high-performing floors withstand constant activity and abuse, seamlessly resilient for optimal ease of maintenance.
