Located in a transitioning neighborhood in the South Bronx, the new school building for the Academic Leadership Charter School (ALCS) serves students in grades Kindergarten through 8th Grade. The Site, located on East 139th Street, is made up of four tax lots and was previously an open parking lot being used by the local police precinct. It is located across the street from PS 49, the Willis Avenue School, and it is surrounded by five story residential buildings.
The First-Floor façade is constructed of a light grey colored ground face block which provides a “solid” but welcoming street façade. The upper floors consist of red and tan brick and two vertical ribbons of curtain wall glazing. These varied materials help to break up the mass of the façade.
We were committed to providing an open, bright, and simple building to support the mission of the school, including open and light rooms and circulation and outdoor play spaces that take advantage of the local neighborhood views.
