“The meaning of life is to find your gift, and the purpose of life is to give it away.” Every aspect of the new South Green Elementary School building, designed by Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects, supports the school district’s mission, offering students opportunities to discover their potential in an environment crafted for next-generation learning.
Traditional corridors are replaced with “purpose paths” to encourage collaboration between students and teachers. Learning is embedded throughout the building, with nearly every square foot dedicated to education and collaborative interaction. The Discovery Hub is a central learning destination, surrounded by classroom pods and flexible zones and offering students access to technology and project-based learning in an open layout that fosters exploration and interaction while ensuring clear supervision by teachers.
Cost savings and disaster resilience are at the forefront of this design. The school is designed to operate at less than 25 EUI (Energy Use Intensity), capable of achieving Zero Energy status. The building’s Insulating Concrete Form structure enhances its sustainability by creating an energy-efficient, durable, and safe environment. The north-south orientation, clerestories for natural light, and compact design further optimize the energy performance of the building.
The interior spaces promote engagement and transparency as the two-story Discovery Hub, centrally located and visible from multiple vantage points, transforms the traditional media center into an active, dynamic space for group work and creative exploration. Art, STEM labs, and resource rooms are connected to this hub, emphasizing a cross-disciplinary approach for next-generation learning.
The new South Green Elementary is designed not just for the students but for the broader community as well. The new facility shares an entrance, gymnasium, and cafeteria with the existing preschool, creating a unified campus. This layout streamlines operations while also fostering a sense of continuity for students and staff. The shared energy-efficient kitchen reduces operational costs, benefiting the entire district.
South Green Elementary School is more than just a learning environment—it is a sustainable, resilient, and dynamic destination where students can discover their gifts and grow into the leaders of tomorrow.
