Troy School District made a conscious decision to shift its middle school educational delivery model and sought a new facility designed specifically to foster a sense of community and inspiration. Working with designer TMP Architecture and educational strategist Fielding International to conceptualize a harmonious blend of innovative architecture and conducive learning environments, the new Smith Middle School came to life. Currently under construction, the design of Smith Middle School focuses on creating smaller learning communities that encourage collaboration, creativity, and engagement among students and educators alike. Thoughtful design elements, including abundant natural light, contribute to the development of the whole student far beyond academics.
The six learning communities are meticulously designed to prioritize security, tranquility, and collaborative learning experiences in groups of 120-150 students. Nestled at the back of the building, these communities will provide a secluded and serene environment with optimal sound quality conducive to focused study and exploration. Each learning community is a self-contained hub of diverse educational activity, composed of a central collaboration zone, three classrooms, a teacher collaboration space, small collaboration rooms, a dedicated science room, and an outdoor classroom. More than just an extension of the interior collaboration zones, the outdoor classrooms will serve as catalysts for creativity, innovation, and connection with the natural world.
At the heart of the new Smith Middle School is a high bay, multi-functional dining space and learning stair which will stand as a beacon of innovation, collaboration, and creativity. Here, students will gather to eat and to enjoy performances, discussions, and a warm and inviting ambiance. Through strategic glazing, visitors to this space will catch glimpses of the dynamic activities unfolding in the STEM room, sparking curiosity and fostering a sense of interconnectedness. Likewise, the art room is front and center with an inspiring gallery showcasing student work and allowing for cross-pollination of ideas.
Featuring flexible spaces and furniture that adapt to varying teaching styles and student needs, the new Smith Middle School will cultivate academic excellence and nurture the holistic development of its students, preparing them to thrive in an ever-evolving world. The experience of the new Smith Middle School will transcend mere education; it will provide a monumental journey of discovery, empowerment, and community.
