Due to its age and inability to provide the types of learning environments desired by the community, replacing Sheiko Elementary allowed TMP to design an educational solution that meets the modern learning needs of the West Bloomfield School District.
The east-west orientation allows the overall concept of the school to feature the State of Michigan & its rich, diverse history – hence the Great Laker Experience was born! From the moment students step into the new school they are immersed in all things Michigan. Cherry blossom pendant lights over the Welcome desk, a Petoskey stone map, sensory walls with gross motor activities & furniture that is theme-tied.
The linear, slightly arched collaboration space furthers the theme. The east side, noted as the port side, highlights the rich history of shipping in Michigan on the Great Lakes. The west end, noted as the dune side, symbolizes western Michigan’s magnificent sand formations and beach environments. The upper level explores the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, highlighting the shipping Locks, the Iron Ore Heritage Trail, & Copper Harbor.
Joining the collaboration at the center is the boardwalk, enhancing the learning experience with a grand Learning Stair and sculptural slide linking the main and upper levels, providing direct access to the dining and gymnasium spaces & access to the outdoor playscape.
Interactive displays throughout the collaboration area provide hands-on learning opportunities & is supported by a simulated campfire celebrating the Indigenous Peoples’ history of the state. Furniture allows ultimate flexibility; floor finishes mimic rivers, land masses & lakes forming the natural features of the state. The abundant use of white oak trim and flooring highlight a natural resource in Michigan.
The I-Center and STEAM Center are located at the upper level with direct access to the outdoor terrace & facilitate special project activities. The suspended terrace rods structurally evoke the Mackinac Bridge.
The Early Childhood portion of the school, located on the east side, incorporates a portside cottage theme for the learning studios with specific sensory activities built into the floors and walls to achieve an active and stimulating environment for the young learners.
